Victory Riders Calgary

January 25, 2018 Meeting

President Kelly in the chair.

12 members present.

Prez Kelly reported that VP Ang has moved to Edmonton creating an opening in the Vice President position. He added that item to the agenda.

Time Up Ride

The Spring Tune Up Ride, (slow riding practice) event was a great success last year and the club is planning to repeat it this year.

Various formats were discussed and it was decided that three two-hour sessions open to the public would be the most effective and meet the demand. Ronny will talk to the head instructor Jim to make sure he is okay with this format and dates can be discussed.

Two Wheel Sunday

DrifterDon reported that plans for Two Wheel Sunday on June 3 were moving along well. There is a new location for the event this year, the greenbelt area north of Cycle Works Calgary and the organization has a new chairman – Steve Grover – who is well known in the bike community. The new location is more than twice as large as the former site, meaning there could be additional room for the Club sponsored Show & Shine. This would mean more volunteers would be needed. The larger site will also mean the event itself needs more volunteers.

Cycle Works

Vince from Cycle Works reported that the shop had a good bike show and was looking forward to participating in other outdoors shows this year.

Garage Sale

The Club is looking at repeating the Garage Sale again this year. Vince suggested the Club use the event to bring out members and to bring new members into the club. He said it should be a sort of meet and greet with a barbecue at Cycle Works to go along with the sales tables. It can be promoted through the website and Facebook. Late May was discussed as a date, but a decision on the final date will be made at the next meeting.

The website – – has been brought up to date and a Rides & Events Calendar added. Many items for 2018 including Club meeting dates are already added to the calendar and members are encouraged to add other rides and events as well.

Rides for 2018

In addition to the rides already on the website, the Club discussed rides for the upcoming season. One suggestion was a trip to Drumheller to see the flat track races August 19 and 20. Rides will be added to the calendar as they are finalized.

The Club had a discussion on how to increase active membership. Items included showing value for membership, a regular 50/50 draw, a chili cookoff event, business cards, a banner for the Victory tent and direct invitations to people to come out to meetings and events.

Vice President

With Ang’s departure, nominations are now pen for the position of Vice President. Please bring nominations to the next meeting.

Next meeting is February 15 at Cycle Works Calgary.

Fresh Start’s Annual Ride is scheduled for August 26. Check the Ride Calendar.

Victory Riders Calgary

Monthly Meeting

January 19

Ronny in the Chair and James at it his side as VP

21 members present

Victory Demise – The meeting opened with Vince from Cycle Works describing the demise of Victory motorcycles from a dealer point of view. He said the announcement came as a surprise to him, hearing it the same time as the public did (necessary for a legal announcement from a publicly-traded company.)

Looking at the situation from a club viewpoint, Vince said this is an opportunity to strengthen the organization. Members will have to pull together and support each other for things like performance information, getting accessories and general bike knowledge.

He said that because of legal requirements, parts and service will be available for 10 years, but he said it would be expected that some specialty or custom items would become more and more scarce as time goes on.

Vince added that his company and other dealers have been selling a surprising number of Victory motorcycles since the announcement.

Calgary Bike Show – Despite the Victory announcement the day after the Calgary Bike Show, the show itself was highly successful for Victory. Volunteers from Victory Riders Calgary staffed the Victory booth at the show, talking to potential Victory owners about what it was like to ride and own a Victory.

Two Wheel Sunday – James announced he will again head the club group to organize the Show & Shine at Two Wheel Sunday on June 4. He will be calling on Club members to help out at the event in registering and organizing bikes, and counting the votes. Next Two Wheel Sunday meeting in February 15, 7 pm at Nicastros.

Awareness Ride – Ronny said the Calgary Victory Riders will again have representation at this year’s Awareness Ride and he will be coordinating. Watch for announcements.

Slo Cones – Several times last year, a number of members participated in a day of setting up and participating in “advanced agility” slow ride training, using traffic cones in a parking lot area. This training is excellent for slow speed maneuvering and bike control. Kelly and Ronny will be organizing these events again when (if?) the snow clears.

Elections – Ronny announced that after seven years as President, he would like to step down. James said he would like to step down as Vice President as well, and Richard said he would like to give up the Treasurer position. James said he would assume the Treasurer spot. Drifter Don said he would stay on as Secretary.

The floor was opened for nominations and when the blood was cleared away Kelly is the new President and Ang becomes Vice President (Troy nominated her, hopefully with her permission.)

Upcoming Riding Season – The group discussed what they would like to see from the upcoming riding season. One item was the creation of a Ride Captain/Ride Coordinator position. The executive will discuss whether this will be a position, a group or an appointment on the day of a ride.

The club is looking to members for suggestions on rides for the season. Post ideas on the club web page or Facebook site or contact a member of the executive.

The group also talked about weekly “show-up, decide and ride” events. These could be organized through the club calendar on its website and Facebook pages.

The possibility of a swap meet was also discussed. This would be a change for club members to clean out their garages to the benefit of other members.

Next Meeting – Next club meeting is February 16, 7 pm at Cycle Works Calgary.
